About Mawlānā Samiruddin Qasmi Ṣāḥeb
Mawlānā Samiruddin Qasmi Ṣāḥeb dāmat barakātuhum is an Indian Islamic scholar living in the United Kingdom. He was born on 6 November 1950, the 25th of Muharram 1370, in the village of Ghutti in the Godda district of what was then Bihar and is now Jharkhand. His subjects are Hanafi jurisprudence, hadith, Islamic creed and Islamic astronomy.
Education
He entered Darul Uloom Deoband in 1968 and completed the dawra-e-hadith, the final year of the ʿālimiyyah course, in Shaʿbān 1390, October 1970. Among his teachers there were Sayyid Fakhruddin Ahmad, Muhammad Tayyib Qasmi, Anzar Shah Kashmiri, Mahmood Hasan Gangohi and Muhammad Salim Qasmi. He read Arabic with Wahiduzzaman Kairanawi, and it was from Naseer Ahmad Khan that he took the Islamic astronomy that he has written on since.
Teaching and writing
He began teaching in January 1973, first in Gujarat and later in England, at Darul Uloom Dewsbury and at Jamia Islamia in Feltham and in Manchester, where he edited the journal al-Jāmiʿah. Since 2000 he has written full time. He is chairman of the religious committee of the Moon Research Centre in the United Kingdom, and has taken part in the seminars of the Islamic Fiqh Academy of India.
His works
His method is the same across the commentaries: a ruling is not left standing on the authority of the school, but is given its evidence from the Qur’an and the hadith, each one referenced to where it can be found, with the positions of the other schools stated beside it.
- Athmār al-Hidāyah: a fifteen-volume Urdu commentary on al-Marghīnānī’s al-Hidāyah, the central text of Hanafi jurisprudence, giving three supporting hadiths with a full reference for every ruling. First printed in December 2008.
- Al-Sharḥ al-Thamīrī: four volumes on al-Qudūrī’s Mukhtaṣar, the first book of fiqh a student meets. Four years’ work, sifting some thirty collections of hadith, and endorsed in March 2003 by Mufti Muhammad Zafeeruddin, Mufti of Darul Uloom Deoband.
- Thamarat un-Najāh: two volumes on al-Shurunbulālī’s Nūr al-Īḍāḥ, the short Hanafi manual of worship. First printed in March 2010.
- Thamarat al-ʿAqāʾid: three hundred and fifty necessary beliefs, each one supported by verses of the Qur’an and by hadith rather than asserted on its own authority. The Urdu edition cites 563 verses and 373 hadiths, and the book has also been published in Arabic, Persian and English.
He has written a good deal besides, in Urdu, Arabic, Persian and English: Thamarat al-Falakiyyāt on Islamic astronomy and the Thamīrī calendar that came out of it, Thamarat al-Awzān on Arabic morphology, Science aur Qurʾān, and Ḥanafiyyah kā maslak iḥtiyāṭ par hai. Those works are being added to this site as they are prepared.
